Minnesota concertgoers were left with a growing concern on Wednesday night. Singer Lionel Richie was forced to abruptly end his concert mid-show during his performance at the St. Paul Grand Casino Arena on June 24, after experiencing a sudden dizzy spell.

X user Patrick Kessler shared the video showing Lionel Richie sitting down on stage during his performance of his hit song Dancing on the Ceiling. The Minnesota fan states that Richie suddenly sat down during the song and said to have been experiencing a sudden dizzy spell.

The 77-year-old Alabama singer attempted to finish the show. However was only to perform one more song, “Three Times a Lady,” before announcing an unplanned intermission. Fans in the crowd believed that Richie would be returning to the stage after a short break. However, unfortunately, the singer was unable to return.

Lionel Richie Unable To Return To Minnesota Stage

Minnesota fans say that the show was only about an hour in, instead of the normal expected 90-minute to two-hour shows. After the singer left the stage, his band followed several minutes later. Around 1030 pm, half an hour after Richie’s exit, a band member returned to the stage to address the crowd. He stated that Lionel would not be returning to the stage due to feeling poorly.

The Minnesota show was the opening night for Lionel Richie’s “Sing A Song All Night Long” joint tour with Earth, Wind, and Fire, who opened the show earlier in the evening. No updates have been released on Lionel’s health condition, or if it will affect the tour moving forward.

“Sounds like he’s having a medical emergency,” Starter Girl writes.

X user Kdonatelle states, “Yeah we were there. His voice was great. He was moving well until he sat down on the stage. Grateful to see him perform.”

“Broke my heart. Hope he is okay,” Trish Dahl adds.

Wow, first Rod Stewart now Lionel Richie . I guess these guys who are nearly 80 might wanna retire soon,” Trevor suggests.

According to a previous People Magazine post, the singer admitted to having experienced a few health issues throughout his career. These included diet-induced acid reflux and vocal cord problems in the early 1990s that required four surgeries.

Other Older Singers Who Fell Ill On Stage In June

Lionel Richie is not the only popular singer who has suffered health issues on and off the stage, forcing them to cancel scheduled performances. Most recent rock legend Rod Stewart was seen using an oxygen tank on stage during his recent Utah performance. Earlier this month, Stewart was reported to have nearly fainted on stage during his performance.

The 81-year-old rock icon was visibly struggling to catch his breath and needed to lean on stage props before his crew brought out an oxygen mask. The on-stage health incidents have fans questioning why some of the aging singers continue to perform, especially if they have suffered recent health scares.

Why They Refuse To Give Up Their Mic

El País 50 reported that Psychological and Identity Factors may have a lot to do with it. The deeply rooted identity issues and the difficulty musicians face when attempting to transition to regular life after decades on the road have them feeling a need to keep reaching for that stage high.

Some experts have suggested that performers who spend decades on stage often develop a strong connection to live audiences and touring. For many artists, performing remains an important part of their identity well into their later years.

No matter what drives some celebrities, including Lionel Richie and Rod Stewart, to keep pushing themselves, one thing is clear. The last thing they want to do is disappoint their longtime dedicated fans.
