Texas Family Desperately Searching for Missing 16-Foot Giraffe Last Seen Near San Antonio: Y’all Lost a What?’

Gracie Is On The Lam

Texas

The state of Texas has everyone on the lookout for an escaped giraffe. The 16-foot-tall three-year-old giraffe is not your usual missing news story, especially for the Lone Star State. While this might be unusual, the story has everyone near San Antonio looking towards the sky, hoping to spot the giraffe and return to back to her hometown ranch in Leakey, Texas, safe and sound.

There have been some wild stories coming out of the state of Texas over the years. However, no one had an escaped giraffe on their 2026 bingo card. But according to ABC News, Gracie the giraffe has been missing for nearly two weeks, and her owners are now offering a $5000 reward for any information leading to her return.

Oddly enough, Gracie has somehow managed to keep a low profile, outsmarting everyone who is helping to hunt her down. So how does a huge giraffe break free from her Cedar Hollow Ranch enclosure and stay basically unseen, or captured? This is the question Internet users across the United States are all asking.

Texas Giraffe Gracie On The Lam

Gracie hasn’t quite managed to avoid all eyes during her escape. According to Realcounty animal rescue officials, the exotic animal was caught on a game camera west of Leakey, a small city about 100 miles northwest of San Antonio. Cedar Hollow Ranch manager, Vicki Jones, spoke with NBC News, sharing the details.

Jones states that Gracie wandered off while feeding on a hillside. This is located in an area of the ranch where their giraffes don’t usually go. Somehow she managed to slip past an 8-foot-tall gate and into an unfenced part of the property. Oddly enough, this is not the first time the ranch has experienced a runaway giraffe.

“Let me get this straight….y’all lost a what?” asks follower ChrisD4.

How does a giraffe just WANDER OFF?” Amber2027bride questions.

What kind of city is San Antonio, where they cannot spot a giraffe?!” Magdah wants to know.

Previously, several young male giraffes have slipped through an open gate before. However, they soon returned to the barn during a storm. Needless to say, the runaway giraffe has captured the attention of people everywhere. They are all questioning how this could happen, and how anyone could miss seeing an animal of this size wandering around.

Grown female giraffes, though varying in size, on average grow to 16 feet tall and weigh as much as 2,600 pounds according to the Denver Zoo. Needless to say, Gracie’s disappearance has everyone baffled.

Gracie is Far From the First Exotic Animal to Escape

In 2025, according to People, a pet zebra in Tennessee escaped from its new owners and ran along Interstate 24 near Nashville, forcing road closures before disappearing into nearby woods.

One of the most infamous animal escapes in U.S. history occurred in 2011 when dozens of lions, tigers, bears, wolves, and other exotic animals were released from a private preserve in Ohio, prompting a massive emergency response and changes to Ohio’s exotic animal laws.

While most escaped exotic animals are eventually recovered, cases like Gracie’s often capture national attention because sightings are rare and rescue efforts can stretch on for days or even months. Giraffes have long been one of the signature attractions at zoos around the world, with many facilities offering popular giraffe-feeding experiences.

People’s Fascination with Giraffes

The fascination with giraffes reached a global audience in 2017 when April the Giraffe, a resident of Animal Adventure Park in New York, became an internet sensation. Millions of people around the world tuned in daily to watch a live webcam as they eagerly waited for April to give birth to her calf. According to ABC News, at its peak, more than a million people watched the birth live, while the livestream itself attracted tens of millions of viewers during the weeks leading up to the event.

While the Cedar Hollow Ranch and Leakey, Texas, residents continue their efforts to locate Gracie and return her safely home, many across the United States will be keeping a close eye on this story, awaiting what they all hope is a happy ending.

Anyone who finds Gracie or has information about her whereabouts is asked to call Jones at (830) 279-5822 or the Real County Sheriff’s Office at (830) 232-5201.
