Illinois Teacher Picks Up Student’s Left Behind Phone And Completely Freaks Out When She Sees The Photos Inside: ‘This Is Diabolical’

Teachers deal with a lot these days, but discovering old photos of yourself plastered across a student’s phone has to rank somewhere near the top of the “absolutely not” list. That’s exactly what happened to one Illinois teacher whose bizarre classroom moment quickly spiraled into viral TikTok chaos.

Tricia Campbell, a teacher from Warrensburg, Illinois, shared the strange situation online after a student apparently “forgot” a phone on her desk. At first, the device looked completely normal. Tricia simply wanted to figure out who it belonged to so she could return it.

When she picked up the phone, she noticed a few photos stuck to the back of the case, but she couldn’t immediately identify the owner. Since none of the images helped solve the mystery, she did what most people probably would do in that situation: she glanced at the home screen.

And that’s when things got weird fast. Instead of seeing a normal wallpaper, Tricia was suddenly staring at photos of herself. Not current selfies. Not school photos from the yearbook hanging in the hallway. Old pictures. Very old pictures.

Naturally, her brain immediately jumped into panic mode. “Some student has downloaded pictures of me and then put them on the phone to freak me out,” the Illinois teacher explained in the viral clip. “And mission accomplished because I’m freaked out.”

The internet immediately did what the internet always does and turned the situation into a full-blown mystery. Viewers flooded the comments with theories ranging from harmless pranks to genuinely creepy possibilities. Some people thought the student had some kind of bizarre obsession, while others assumed it had to be a setup for a joke.

Thankfully, the truth turned out to be way more hilarious than disturbing. In a follow-up video, Tricia revealed the mastermind behind the prank: a student named Keani. And once he explained the backstory, the entire thing suddenly became comedy gold.

The old photos weren’t secretly collected from social media or pulled from the dark corners of the internet. Nope. They came from a 2004 yearbook that belonged to his father. Turns out Tricia has been teaching for a long time — long enough that she actually taught Keani’s dad back in the day. In fact, she also taught his mother. Talk about a full-circle moment.

The Truth Is Far Less Sinister Than The Theories

“I taught his dad because I started teaching in 1998. I’m almost 50,” she explained. Keani apparently thought it would be funny to scan the vintage yearbook photos of Miss Campbell, put them all over his phone, and casually leave the device sitting on her desk just to see her reaction. Which, to be fair, was a pretty successful prank considering she genuinely looked shaken in the original video.

“This is diabolical,” one person commented. “Kids are so funny for no reason,” said another. “Funniest prank ever,” a third person weighed in. “Peak high school content,” a fourth comment read.

And honestly, this feels like the kind of harmless school chaos people actually enjoy seeing online for once. No screaming matches. No wild scandals. Just a teenager using early-2000s yearbook photos to psychologically confuse his teacher for entertainment.

The best part may actually be how quickly the internet went from concerned to completely invested in the joke. After the prank reveal, Keani even made an appearance himself and encouraged viewers to vote for Tricia in America’s Favorite Teacher competition. If she wins, she could receive $25,000, a trip to Hawaii, and even a visit from Bill Nye to her school district.

Not bad for the Illinois who started the week thinking a student had secretly turned her into their phone wallpaper obsession.
