Things got awkward real quick in a Texas courtroom when a man showed up to his court appearance wearing a bold “Black Excellence” t-shirt, only to get called out by the judge for not exactly living up to the message.
A short but sizzling 40-second video clip of the exchange has gone viral, with the internet buzzing about the Texas courtroom moment that many are calling equal parts cringeworthy and powerful.
The now-infamous video starts off with what seems like a routine court Q&A, until the judge begins asking the man about his family situation. “Do you have any children?” she asks. “Yes, ma’am,” the man replies confidently. But that confidence doesn’t last long.
The judge continues, “What are their ages?” His response? “Four, three, two, one, and six months.” It’s almost as if he was listing a countdown to chaos. Then comes the kicker. When asked where the kids are, he replies, “Their mothers.” Plural. She follows up, “How many mothers?” and he casually answers, “Three.”

That’s when the courtroom energy shifts completely. The judge, clearly unimpressed, doesn’t hold back. With a calm but firm tone, she says, “All right, that is not Black excellence.”

She goes on to give a mini reality check that could rival any parent-teacher conference. “The fact that you’re here is not Black excellence. Unless that’s the name of the building, but I’m assuming it’s not,” she says, with razor-sharp sarcasm. “You are not showing Black excellence to your ancestors, or to your mother, your grandfather, or anyone. You understand?”
The man, clearly humbled, replies, “Yes, ma’am.” And just when you think the judge is done, she lands one final blow: “So don’t wear Black excellence if you’re not showing it.”

“Even if you can’t afford a suit, even just a button up and some khakis makes a world of a difference in how presentable someone looks in court,” another stated.
