One North Carolina family is counting their blessings following a horrific ordeal that took place at their 4-year-old son’s daycare, which nearly cost them their child’s life. Most parents trust daycare centers to provide a safe, nurturing environment where their children can play and learn without fear. But sometimes, unexpected dangers can change everything in an instant, leaving families shaken and demanding answers.

That’s exactly what happened at New Beginnings Child Enrichment Center in Stony Point, North Carolina, when a routine afternoon of play turned into a nightmare. A 4-year-old boy suddenly began experiencing swelling in his hand while playing near the sandbox. Staff reportedly believed the child had either a splinter or possibly an injury from play. His guardian was contacted to come pick him up.

It wasn’t until the guardian arrived that the full truth came out. The boy hadn’t suffered a minor playground injury. He had been bitten by a copperhead snake, one of the most venomous species in the region. Even more concerning, emergency services confirmed they never received a 911 call regarding the bite. Instead, the family had to rush the boy to the hospital themselves.

Daycare staff later confirmed that the snake had been killed before children returned to the playground. Still, questions linger about why first responders weren’t contacted immediately. Local 911 officials emphasized that while they don’t carry anti-venom, they regularly respond to snake bites and can stabilize victims before hospital arrival.

North Carolina Daycare Defends Its Actions

The boy’s relatives were understandably shaken. They wondered why no emergency call was made and whether other parents had been properly informed. A child suffering from a venomous bite is every parent’s worst nightmare, and the lack of immediate communication only added to their fear and frustration.

In a public statement, one of the North Carolina daycare’s co-directors explained that staff initially mistook the swelling for a splinter and that the child continued playing after the bite, making it difficult to identify the real issue right away. Once staff realized it was indeed a snake bite, the guardian was called back urgently, and the child was taken to the hospital for treatment. However, the Internet is having a hard time buying into the daycare’s excuses.

They are all lying about splinter bs. The daycare should be shutdown,” one shocked parent writes.

You can try to cover it up as much as you want, but this is a lawsuit,” another adds.

The daycare has since said the playground was secured. The snake was removed, and the safety of its children remains the top priority. They also promised to work with local experts to prevent anything like this from happening again.

The North Carolina child is now recovering. But this incident leaves a troubling question hanging in the air. If a dangerous situation can be mistaken for something so minor, how many other emergencies could slip through the cracks? For parents sending their kids off to daycare each day, the hope is that this case serves as a wake-up call. Because when it comes to venomous snakes and children, every second matters.
