Funerals are already emotionally overwhelming enough without turning into something that sounds straight out of a horror movie. But one New Jersey family says that’s exactly what happened during a burial service that has resurfaced online years later and is once again leaving people absolutely stunned.

Back in 2017, relatives gathered at Mount Holiness Memorial Park in New Jersey to say goodbye to 85-year-old Cleveland Butler after he passed away following a stroke. What should have been a solemn moment honoring their father and grandfather reportedly became deeply disturbing when the family noticed something horrifying inside the grave.

As Butler’s bright blue casket was being lowered into the ground in New Jersey, family members say a decaying human foot suddenly became visible in the dirt near the burial site. Yes. A human foot. And according to relatives who witnessed it, the situation only became more upsetting from there.

New Jersey Family Funeral Turns Into Disturbing Display At Gravesite

Cleveland’s daughter, Sandra Butler, later described the experience as emotionally devastating while speaking about the ordeal publicly. “This was a very traumatizing situation, first dealing with losing my father and then this,” she explained. “I couldn’t even look at it. It was too much.”

According to the family, the foot and part of a leg appeared wrapped in both plastic and cloth near the casket as workers continued the burial process. Relatives were reportedly so shocked that some immediately took photos to document what they were seeing.

Cleveland’s son, Alonzo Butler, recalled the moment in graphic detail. “We all looked down and we were looking at what apparently was a human foot and leg wrapped in plastic, with cloth wrapped around it, sticking out on top of my father’s casket,” he said.

And if that wasn’t disturbing enough, the family says cemetery workers allegedly continued filling the grave despite the discovery. “It was like business as usual for them,” she said. “They just dumped the dirt in the plot like it was normal.”

So Traumatic

The New Jersey family also revealed that the horrifying discovery reportedly happened after one of the cemetery workers accidentally dropped both his phone and a pack of cigarettes into the open grave. While using a rake to retrieve the items, the worker allegedly exposed the remains.

At that point, relatives say everyone present realized they were likely looking at remains from a neighboring burial site. Needless to say, the situation sparked outrage and calls for accountability. Reverend Kevin McCall of the National Action Network publicly condemned the incident at the time, calling the ordeal deeply disturbing for a grieving family to witness.

“This is beyond heinous for anyone to witness during their time of grieving over a loved one,” he said while urging officials to investigate the matter.

The Internet Reacts

Now, nearly a decade later, the story is making the rounds online again, and people are reacting with the exact same horror all over again. Social media users have been calling the situation “nightmare fuel,” while others questioned how something so disturbing could allegedly happen during a public burial service without immediate intervention.

“My family woulda been crackin jokes,” one person commented online. “I would’ve fainted,” said another. “That’s traumatic,” a third person declared. “I’m not mature enough to witness that,” a fourth comment read.

The New Jersey family has had years to come to terms with this traumatizing event. However, the memory likely still sticks with them.
