“Saved By The Bell” fans remember getting excited to see what the gang would be up to by watching the show every week. Everyone loved Zach, Kelly, Slater, Jessie, Lisa, and Screech.
However, what they didn’t know was all the shocking details that went on behind the scenes…until now.
.) Swearing Ban – Producer Peter Engle put a swearing ban on set. No one was allowed to use a curse word, which likely helped the teen cast stay in character.
.) Mark-Paul Gosselaar dated Lark Vorhees! – Zach’s heart may have belonged to Kelly, but off screen Mark-Paul was engaged in a 3-year relationship with Lark, who played Lisa. In fact, according to Dustin Diamond’s (Screech) book, the entire cast dated each other off and on.
.) Lisa Turtle Jewish? – The character of Lisa Turtle was supposed to be a spoiled Jewish girl from Long Island, but producers loved Lark Vorhees so much they changed the character for her!
.) Mario Lopez accused of date rape – Mario Lopez (A.C. Slater) was accused of date rape. NBC execs allegedly paid off the woman who accused him, and the validity of her claims were never proven, or disproven.
.) Mark-Paul Gosselaar took steroids – Mark Paul was also a bit on the skinny side, until he returned for “Saved By The Bell: The College Years” looking buffed up. According to Dustin Diamond’s book, he took anabolic steroids to quickly beef up.
.) Zach and Screech – The characters of Zach and Screech were the only two characters to appear in every episode of the show.
.) A ‘Saved By The Bell’ Musical? – Peter Engle wrote a “Saved By The Bell” musical in hopes of bringing the teen drama to Broadway. Sadly, this never worked out. (Hey, he could always try again!)
.) Dustin Diamond’s Downfall – Dustin Diamond, who played Screech Powers on the show has filed for bankruptcy, appeared on “Celebrity Fit Club,” released his own sex tape, before finally writing “Behind The Bell,” the tell-all “Saved By The Bell” memoir.
.) Elizabeth Berkley as Kelly? – Elizabeth Berkley, who played Jessie Spano, originally auditioned for the role of Kelly, but the producers like Tiffani-Amber Theissen for the role, so they wrote the character of Jessie just for Elizabeth.
.) Screech was youngest – Dustin Diamond was 3 years younger than his co-stars, which likely contributed to him feeling alienated from the group.
.) Zach vs. Slater – Zach and Slater started off as rivals, competiting for Kelly’s heart. However, Mark-Paul and Mario had such great chemistry off screen that writers decided they should become best friends.
.) Zach’s Bottle Blonde – Mark-Paul Gosselaar was forced to continuously dye his hair blonde to maintain Zach Morris’ blonde ‘do. In reality, Mark-Paul has dark hair.
.) Not So Subtle Setting Change – When “Saved By The Bell” debuted it was titled “Good Morning Miss Bliss,” which was set in Indianna, and followed Zach, Screech, and a group of other kids. The series didn’t make it, and when Zach and Screech went to high school, they were magically transported to sunny California, with a whole new group of kids making up the show, “Saved By The Bell.”
.) The Set Still Exists! – The “Saved By The Bell” set was never taken down. In fact, parts of the set, such as the red lockers, have been recycled in other teen shows like “That’s So Raven,” and “iCarly.”
.) The Tori’s – Aaron Spelling’s daughter, Tori Spelling, guest starred on the show as Screech’s girlfriend, Violet. After her departure, a character named Tori, a tough motorcycle riding leather wearing babe, was introduced to the show, and named after Spelling’s daughter, who was busy filming “Beverly Hills 90210.”
There you have it! 15 things you (probably) didn’t know about “Saved By The Bell.” What do you think about the shocking behind the scenes details?
