The “Dexter” season finale was shocking to say the least. As Dexter Morgan prepares to leave the country with his fugitive girlfriend, Hannah McKay, and son Harrison, tragedy strikes as he learns sister Debra has been shot by serial killer Oliver Saxson aka Daniel Vogel.
Dexter rushes to Debra’s side, as she is seemingly fine. However, Dex can’t bring himself to leave for Argentina until he knows Saxson’s taken care of.
Dexter sends Hannah off with Harrison to begin their journey as a terrible hurricane brews. Hannah is forced to take the bus out of Miami, but her plan is stalled when she finds the bounty hunter who’s been tailing her on her bus.
However, Hannah, being the clever former killer that she is, finds a way to make it out of the country, drugging the private investigator with some of Dexter’s finest.
Meanwhile, Dexter and Quinn get terrible news. Debra has taken a turn for the worse. Miss Morgan suffered a blood clot which lead to a massive stroke. Dexter and Quinn are told that even if she makes it, she’ll never eat on her own, and will not have much brain function. Devastated, Dexter is beside himself.
As all of this is going on Saxson is busy plotting his revenge. He creates a diversion at the hospital and quickly tries to find Debra. Dexter is on his tail and meets him in the hallway of the hospital where Batista arrests him.
Later, Dexter claims Saxson’s life behind bars claiming self-defense. Back at the hospital Dexter kills his most unlikely of victims – his sister, Debra.
Dex apologizes for all the wrongs he’s committed in his sister’s life, and shuts off the machines keeping Deb alive. This is an emotional scene where Dexter sees the one person he’s always loved die.
Dexter steals Debra’s lifeless body from the hospital in all the commotion of the hurricane and boards his boat.
He sails into the middle of the ocean and calls Hannah, who is boarding the plane to take herself and Harrison out of the country. Dexter tells Harrison that he will always love him, and to remember that until they meet again.
Dexter comes to the reality that he kills everyone he loves, and is no good for anyone. He drops his phone in the ocean, says a final goodbye to Debra, and then throws her body into the water, watching her disappear into the ocean.
Then Dexter drives his boat off into the middle of the hurricane.
Later, Batista gets a call from the Coast Guard saying they’ve found the wreckage of Dexter’s boat, and there are no survivors.
Cut to Hannah and Harrison in an overseas outdoor café. Hannah is on her tablet, and sees the news of Dexter’s death. Ms. McKay sheds a few silent tears, and walks off with Harrison into the busy street to get ice cream.
Fade to black, and we all think it’s over. Debra’s dead, Dexter’s dead, and nothing will ever be the same.
However…we see a man logging in a dreary town. He finishes his days’ work and heads home to a small, lonely cabin. The bearded man sits down at his table, and we see Dexter Morgan one final time looking lost and guilt ridden.
That’s it. The end of Dexter Morgan’s saga, and eight long years of following the beloved serial killer.
Unfortunately, the “Dexter” series finale left us wanting more like no other season finale in the show’s history. What happens to the Miami Metro gang now? What will become of Hannah and Harrison, who is Dexter’s ultimate victim, and will Dexter continue to kill? These unanswered questions will likely never be answered for “Dexter” fans.
